The only way the rear axle can possibly go on the LS650 is with the 24mm end on the left and the 17mm end on the right. It's impossible to install it the other way, or the rear drive pulley and the rear brake drum would never fit!
The Clymer Manual and your Savage are correct!
Now, take my advice: Go to Sears and buy a set of Craftsman Metric Combination Wrenches, a 1/2" drive Metric Socket Set, and a 150-ft.lb. Torque Wrench. If you're gonna fool around with your own maintenance, then you'll need 'em!
Also...make friends with Bryan Felsher on this Forum. He's very knowledgeable on bike repair and maintenance. He's 26 years old and I'm 65!
